The Examination – Uhttsalvis

Photography: Jeff Fasano.

I can imagine the excitement when Herman Ludborg arrived in Sápmi. The sound of sparkling fires, dog barking and children playing mixed with laughter and a sense of curiosity. How the Samis studied the new visitors and joked about the large backpacks filled with strange things such as camera equipment, books and notepads.

There were probably a few people who understood the Professor because the majority language was Sami and someone probably had to translate the conversations between the professor and the Samis.

I imagine that Herman Lundborg used a superior communication and that the Sami also had a hard time questioning demands and wishes from the Professor who was a respected person and a doctor who was a rarity in Sápmi at that time.

I think that at that time it was difficult to understand that you were subjected to a racist abuse and that it was difficult for the Samis to speak up for oneself. That the very act in when people were examined and measured was an offensive situation difficult for the individual to defend oneself against. A situation where one can feel the wrong but not put into words what actually happens because one does not in the wildest dream understand that it happens.

I think that over time when I understand the extent of the racist abuse of the Sami as a people and realize that laws and regulations were also introduced against the background of a racist idea. Then it becomes more difficult to deal with the fact that Sweden has not even officially apologized for the investigations or returned pictures from that time to the Sami people.
